I met the wonderful Sarah Fine at the Missouri Writers Guild conference this past April, when I was her shepherd! She has written a wonderful YA fantasy novel, and it’s the beginning of a series. SO, all my friends and family that love YA and series, you have to check out: Sanctum, book one of the Guards of the Shadowlands series. Here’s a bit about the book:
*YA contemporary fantasy *17-year-old girl as main character *Rating: Sanctum has one of the best female main characters I’ve been able to get behind since Katniss! I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Short, short summary: Lela has had a tough life, passed around to different foster homes, including one with an abusive foster father. Finally, in her last home, her life is turning around–she has a great foster mom and found an unusual best friend in one of the most popular girls in school, Nadia. Lela has a secret she doesn’t share: she tried to commit suicide a couple years ago, and she saw the SHADOWLANDS, a step before? Hell, where you go if you commit suicide. Because she was saved from the brink of death, she didn’t die, but her dreams take her to the Suicide Gates at night. SO, when Nadia shockingly commits suicide, Lela is beyond herself with worry over what will happen to her best friend. Without revealing any more of the plot, let’s just say that Lela winds up in the Shadowlands, trying to save Nadia. While she’s there, she meets a wonderful hero, Malachi, and they set out on an adventure through a terrifying land to save Nadia.

What can I do with this book?
Here are some discussion points/journal writing prompts:
1. Friendship is a strong bond between two people. Why does Lela risk everything to save Nadia? Do you have a friend like this? Are you a friend like this?
2. What makes a good friend?
3. What are some positive ways to take a break and escape when you feel stressed out?
4. What are some of the “rules” of the Shadowlands? YA fantasy authors create their own worlds, but these worlds always have rules.
5. If you could be any character in Sanctum, which one would you be and why?
