Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld

August 18, 2011 in Elementary Educators, Picture Book, Preschool to 1st grade teachers, Shared Writing

*Picture book for preschoolers through 1st graders
*Duck or rabbit as main character
*Rating: Duck! Rabbit! is one of those books that I wished I would have thought of. It’s super cute.

Short, short summary: The narrators of this book (whom we never really meet) are arguing whether there’s a duck or a rabbit present in the illustrations. It is hard to tell which it is. When I first looked at the picture, I thought for sure a rabbit, but then I quickly saw the duck. When it takes forever for the narrators to agree, the duck-rabbit disappears. And a new mystery presents itself. What do you see in the picture above? A duck or a rabbit?

So, what do I do with this book?

1. Start a debate with students or your children–do they think it is a duck or rabbit? Once students choose a side, they need to try to prove their reasoning.

2. Use this book to write a creative story about a duck who thinks he is a rabbit or vice-versa. You can do it as a shared writing activity if need be.

3. Do your students or children ever make pictures in the clouds? If you have time, take your class outside to look at clouds and make pictures. And let students write about what they see.
