What’s better than a Madeline book by Ludwig Bemelmans?
A collection of Madeline stories all in one book!
That’s what you’ll find in the Mad About Madeline book–The Complete Tales. This timeless story started when readers met Madeline in 1939, and she had to go to the hospital and have her appendix out. And in Paris nonetheless! Children have been reading that story for over seventy years, growing up, and then reading it to their children and grandchildren. The illustrations of Paris are one thing to love, but everyone also seems to just love the simple story and the wonderful character of Madeline.
Also in the collection are: Madeline’s Rescue, Madeline in London, Madeline and the Bad Hat, Madeline and the Gypsies, & Madeline’s Christmas. (Who doesn’t want to see Christmas lights on the Eiffel Tower?) The collection is fully illustrated and looks just like the individual books, although the size of the book is a little smaller.
Why share Madeline with you children today? What can you use these books to do?
For one thing, you can give your child or your students a trip to Paris or London without ever leaving the comfort of your own home or classroom. Bemelmans gives you a list of the famous places he illustrated at the end of his first Madeline book in case you were curious. You can share these with your children or students.
You can also use Madeline books to talk about rhyming words since Bemelmans makes all his books rhyme.
And let’s face it, Madeline and the twelve little girls in two straight lines are just plain fun!
